It is important to test your pages to insure your markup (code) is valid.  A Xhtml document must follow the rules of the DTD declared at the beginning of the page to be valid.  Once you have declared the page doctype, you can use this tool to easily check your HTML code for validity.  It supports HTML 4.0 transitional, strict, XHTML, XML, and even legacy doctypes as well.
